What is a Chemical skin peel treatment?

Chemical Skin Peel is a solution that is applied to the skin to gently ‘peel off’ the outer layers to produce a noticeably more even skin tone. The ‘peeling’ occurs about 2-3 days after the treatment. A peel can also help to stimulate the production of new skin cells – leaving your skin with a youthful glow.
There are three main levels of Chemical Skin Peel, depending on how deeply you want your skin to be treated: superficial, medium depth and deep. The deeper the peel, the better the results; however, the peel required will depend on the imperfections you want to eliminate and the tolerance of your skin. In every case your Renew Consultant will help you to choose the most suitable strength of peel for you.

What happens when I have my skin peeling treatment?

At your first consultation with Renew, you will be asked what you expect from the treatment and how you would like to look afterwards. We will talk you through exactly what the treatment will involve and how long it will take for you to recover from it. The treatment procedures vary depending on the depth of peel and combination of peels used.

We will also take a medical history from you, to ensure that there are no reasons why you shouldn’t have the treatment. Once we are ready to proceed, we will ask you to sign a consent form indicating that you have understood the potential benefits and risks associated with the peel procedure that we have recommended.

A Chemical Skin Peel should be repeated every few weeks, with a total of around 4–6 sessions, to achieve the desired result.

Are Chemical Skin Peels right for me?

Chemical Skin Peels produce excellent results at eliminating:

sun-damaged skin
* fine lines and wrinkles
* age spots
* freckles and pigmentation
* scaly patches and rough skin
* acne scars.

Any other Frequently Asked Questions about skin peeling?

What is the difference between a Superficial Peel, a Medium Depth Peel and a Deep Peel?

Superficial Peel is ideal for reducing rough patches of dry, flaking or rough skin. It is also very effective at reducing fine lines due to sun damage and light marks, such as acne scars or age spots. A Superficial Peel will balance an irregular skin tone, giving an even, flawless appearance.

Medium Depth Peel can reduce wrinkles lines and deeper acne scars. It can also balance out certain pigmentation problems.
Deep Peel dramatically improves the appearance of deeper wrinkles and scars.

Will a Chemical Peel help close up enlarged pores or tighten sagging skin?

A Chemical Peel, regardless of depth used, will not change the size of pores or tighten sagging skin. It is also inadvisable to treat very deep scarring with a Chemical Peel.

How long does it take to recover from a Chemical Peel?

Recovery can take a few weeks, depending on the depth of peel you have used. Your age, skin type, as well as your natural healing ability, also contribute to your healing process. Your Renew Consultant will advise you on your recovery before the procedure.

What are the main side effects of a Chemical Peel?

Depending on the depth of peel, the side effects you might experience vary. Obviously, the deeper the peel, the more painful the procedure. Your Renew Consultant will discuss this with you in full before you proceed.

The most common side effects are a stinging sensation while the peel is on the skin. Afterwards the skin may be slightly swollen and is often pink in colour and may be slightly blotchy. You might experience itchiness as the skin starts to peel. Then, once the skin has peeled, your skin will be red, gradually fading to pink over 3–6 weeks. The duration of the redness depends on the depth of your peel; our doctor will inform you of all the side effects depending on your particular case.
