Botox – Generalities

We generally associate Botox with wrinkle removal and wrinkle prevention, but, in fact, this substance is used in a far wider variety of treatments than just cosmetic medicine. At Renew Skin & Health Clinic, we use its ability to cause partial and controlled muscle paralysis in a number of muscular dysfunction treatments, ranging from blepharospasm to axillary hyperhidrosis.

Botox, known by the medical community as the botulinum toxin, is a protein that also acts as a powerful neurotoxin and can be used to for a number of medical or cosmetic issues ranging from muscle dysfunction to wrinkle removal. The origin of the botulinum toxin is found in the Clostridium botulinum organism and its spores, which exist freely in nature; this bacterium can also be found in the intestinal tracts of some mammals and fish. The Botox substance is categorized into eight types, namely: A, B, C, D, E F, G and H. While types A, B, E and sometimes F, have been found to cause botulism in humans, a potentially fatal illness that often causes muscular paralysis, this affliction remains very rare. The botulinum toxin is in fact one of the most poisonous substances known to man, a single gram being able to cause the death of approximately 1 million people. Of course, in a proper clinical environment, it is impossible for the patient to experience Botox poisoning. Within this environment, the botulinum toxin is prepared by diluting the Botox powder in bacteriostatic saline liquid, the result being then micro-injected into the designated area. The proportions used to produce the injectable substance may differ slightly from clinic to clinic, but they are always carefully calculated not to produce any serious health threat to the patient.

In most cases of medical and cosmetic treatments, Botox is utilized as a muscle relaxant. When a muscle contracts, the nerve connected to it releases a chemical messenger called acetylcholine, which is a neurotransmitter. The acetylcholine attaches to the muscle cell receptors and causes the muscle to contract. Injecting the botulinum toxin in a particular area of the body will, in fact, inhibit the production of acetylcholine and thus prevent any muscle contraction. This unique quality allows the Botox substance to be used in a number of treatments, including jaw reduction, blepharoplasty, chronic migraines and axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), by simply relaxing the muscle tissue that is causing the issue. It is also used for wrinkle removal and wrinkle prevention.
