Peel
back the skin far enough and you will finally reach the third and last
layer, the subcutaneous fat layer or also known as the hypodermis layer.
This
layer is crucial for keeping the body warm as it is largely made up of
fat. This layer also helps the body absorb shock which stops the shock
from reaching the organs that lie beneath this layer. The subcutaneous
layer is also responsible for binding all of your skin tissues
underneath it.
This area is where your hair starts its growth
process and you will find the tube that the hair grows out of called
the follicle. Every follicle has its roots firmly embedded in the
subcutaneous layer and the follicle eventually passes through all three
layers to emerge as hair on the outer layer of the skin. Believe
it or not there are 1000's of hair follicles that exist upon your skin
and the human head alone has 100,000 of these hair follicles growing on
it. That is unless you are bald and in this case there will be
considerably less hair follicles. There are very few places on the skin
where hair follicles don't exist. The palms of your hand are one such
area as well as the lips and the soles of your feet.
