Dermis - The second Layer

Dermis

Lying beneath the Epidermis is the second layer of skin known as the dermis. This layer of skin is very unique as it serves as a cushion protecting the inner body from general day to day bumps and strains.

The epidermis and the dermis are very tightly connected by a system of tissue known as a basement membrane.

The dermis is also very rich in Mechanoreceptor (nerve endings) which helps us to determine the different sensations such as heat or touch.

The dermis is a very crowded area of the skin as it also contains sebaceous glands, sweat glands, hair follicles, aprocrine glands and blood vessels.

Nourishment is provided through the cells of the Dermis and is also responsible for waste removal

The dermis is split into two separate areas, one area called the papillary region and then there is a deeper, thicker area called the reticular region.

Papillary region

This region is made up out of loose connecting tissue called areola tissue. It is named so for its likeness to finger like projections known as papillae which branch out towards the epidermis. Take a look at your fingerprints and you will see the papillae at work. Notice the bumpy service? This also helps the epidermis and the dermis to create a strong bond between the two layers of skin.

Another great advantage of having this ridge like patterns on the skin is the skin is able to grasp onto things as the ridges provide a good deal of friction. Fingerprints are unique to the individual and no two finger prints are ever alike.
