Acne Vulgaris - Types of acne

acne vulgaris

Acne Vulgaris will generally effect nearly all members of the population at some point throughout their lives. This form of acne is much more prominent than people realize and contrary to popular believe it is not related to any form of poor skin care what so ever and people with healthy skin regime are just as likely to contract this disease as somebody who cares little for their skin.
Acnѐ vulgaris can be recognized through specific skin conditions such as noninflammatory follicular comedones or in its most severe forms the papules or comedones can become severely inflamed.
The most common areas for this type of skin acne to attack are the back the chest and the face. This is caused because these areas of the skin contain the most sebaceous glands and sebaceous follicles which overly contribute to the causes of skin acne.

In its most severe form Acnѐ vulgaris can cause quite deep and lasting acne scars yet it is proven that early acne treatment can prevent this radical process from happening. Acne treatments are something that we discuss in further articles so if you are worried about finding the right acne treatment or you have already a acne scar or several acne scars then you will find some very useful information under the Understanding acne treatments section of this site.

Although all types of acne bring some form of psychological discomfort acne vulgaris can cause lasting psychological effects as the presence of this disease has such a prominent effect on the carrier.

Acnѐ vulgaris begins with the formation of blackheads or whiteheads where the follicle becomes blocked and the pore cannot breath. This causes the natural oils produced by the skins sebaceous glands to form a trapped reservoir of oil. This reservoir of oil attracts bacteria which then causes the skin to become swollen, sore and irritated.
This skin bacteria is called Propionibacterium acnes.

Acne Conglobata

acne conglobataAcne Conglobata is a very severe form of acne that is visually diagnosed through the burrowing like symtoms of the lesians on the skin and the interconnecting ulcers and abcesses that dominate the skins surface.
Although a very rare form of acne this variety has to be one of the worst forms that anyone can suffer from as the sheer magnitude of disfigurement that the patient suffers from is very extreme. Acne Conglobata is formed through the apperancen of 2 to 3 comedones or cysts that fill with a foul smelling and revolting pus that will return even after it has been drained.
This disease can attack the usual areas of the body that regular acne attacks such as the face, the chest, the back and the head but it can also be found to attack the buttocks, thighs and shoulders.

Acne Conglobata can form after regular acne has been dormant for many years and this skin disease is more likely to be present in males than females. Even though there has been many years of intense diagnosis into the causes of acne, this type of acne is still not fully understood.

Acne can be found in many different forms but pretty much starts in the same way.

Below are pictures and descriptions of the different types of acne that can be found on the skin.

Papules

PapulesPapules appear as a red and swollen lesion on the skin's surface that is void of any pus or any form of a whitehead or a blackhead.
Papules develop following a break down within the follicle wall which allows dirt and bacteria to spill through and rest within the cavity or the dermis. The break in the follicle wall can be caused by excessive squeezing of the skin or it can occur if the pore becomes engorged with a backlog of oil abd built up debris.
Although there may be a great temptation to squeeze the papule it is important that you try your best not to succumb as the risks of the papule progressing to a more severe form of skin lesion will be much higher.

Pustules

pustulesPustules are the more common form of a pimple typically found with a red and swollen lump on the skin with a whitehead within the center of the pustule. Pustules can form and take on different sizes and some are very small whilst others can be quite large in size.
These spots develop from a papule. As the bodies devense system kicks in the area is filled with white blood cells that surround the foreign body. This fluid is known a pus and can be made up of sebaceous fluid and waste debris.
Like papules the temptation to sueeze the pustule is very hard to beat but it is important not to squeeze as this will only infect more of the skin!
