This type of facial related disease is extremely
common amongst the population of adults who are middle aged. Often
mistaken for an aggravated form of eczema acne roseacea is a flushing
type red inflamed area of the skin most commonly found on the chin or
the forehead. The appearance is caused by inflamed bumps that lie
beneath the skins surface.
People who usually suffer from rosacia can be mistaken for someone who
drinks heavily as some of the flushing facial characteristics are the
same as that of a alcoholic although this type of acne has no bearing
on whether a person drinks or doesn't drink.
Statistics suggest that this form of acne effects as
many as 14 million people in the US which is a massive proportion of
people. Other physical symptoms may be seen as broken blood vessels,
pink patches or red patches of skin around the face, tiny red bumps or
even pink or an irritated appearance on the eyes.
The effects of acne roscea are considered to be a long term, chronic
skin problem where the infected person will have periods of intense
activity and periods of very little activity. With traditional acne
patients they often outgrow their symptoms yet with rosacea the patient
will often be prone to attacks for most of their lives.
Unfair as it may seem Acne Rosacea can infect people
more so if they have light or fair skin and it is more common for
people with Irish or Scottish origins to suffer from this type of acne.
Study somebody with rosacea closely enough and you will see that the
redness on the skin is caused by small blood vessels in the skin to
become inflated and enlarge thus becoming more visible and noticeable.
The patient can have on the skins surface what appear to be tiny red
lines which the medical term is known as telangiectasias. Acne Rosacea
can appear the same as common acne and for the untrained eye you would
believe that the patient is suffering from common acne.
Is Rosacea really Acne?
Although rosacea is thought to be an acne in reality
it isn't but the two are closely related. It is more commonly called
'adult acne' even though it isn't. The difference between rosacea and
acne is you will find no blackheads or whiteheads and the tiny red
lumps that appear on the skin cannot be squeezed. Rosacea can affect all ages and all
sexes all though it does ten to affect women more than it affects men
yet when men suffer from this skin disease they do tend to be subject
to a more severe form of Acne Rosacea.
It is extremely rare for
a child to contract this skin disorder and the darker your skin tone
then the less chance there is for you to be prone to these attacks.
What is Rosacea?
The
exact causes of this skin disorder are still very much a mystery and
this facial skin disorder has caused more than enough controversial
debate amongst dermatologists for many years.
In basic terms it
appears that the sufferers of Acne Rosecea are prone to blood vessels
in the face becoming dilated and swollen.
Triggers of this skin
condition can vary from patient to patient but common triggers are too
much sun exposure, hereditary conditions where the patient has
contracted the facial disease from their parents, a small mite living
in the hair follicle of the skin known as Demodex folliculorum and
there are some medications that may have a negative effect on the blood
vessels of the skin and cause them to widen.
Emotional changes can
also have a prominent effect on Rosasea and like eczema attacks, this
skin condition can and does trigger in response to the emotional
behaviors of the patient. Stress, anxiety and fear can trigger an
attack or too much sun or extreme changes in the weather can also cause
a flare up.
Skincare starts with knowledge
Knowing
what particular type of Rosacea you are suffering from will always help
to find the right acne treatment and will help to overcome your
skincare problems. Acne treatments start with the proper diagnosis and
we have provided the following pictures and articles to help you
successfully determine your particular skin condition and work towards
the right skincare products for your condition.
Rosacea on the nose
Extreme
Rosacea can strike at random and can disfigure the face in a horrible
way. The nose is generally one of the first areas to be affected by
this skin condition and it becomes inflated, bumpy and red in
appearance. This isn't a sign that the person suffering from extreme
rasacea has poor skin care routine or they haven't followed the
correct acne treatments. Remember this skin condition can strike anyone
at random.
The bad news is if this condition is left untreated then
it can develop into a more serious condition called rhinophyma which is
an unsightly growth of the nose where the nose becomes swollen and
bulbous and the cheeks become red and puffy. This condition will mainly
effect men and in the most severe cases the patient will need surgery
to repair the skin.
In a lot of cases where rosacea attacks
the nose it can be wrongly assumes that the person suffering from the
skin condition may be a drunk and the skin has turned red due to
excessive alcohol consumption. In a lot of these patients this false
assumption couldn't be further from the truth and they can do little to
overcome their problems without the correct diagnosis and medical help.
Rosacea and the eyes
Whether
rosacea affects the eyes is largely down to the individuals own immune
system and in a lot of cases the eye will stay clear of this skin
disease. The medical term for such a condition when rosacea does affect
the eyes is known as ocular rosacea and the patient will feel a
burning, itching or dryness of the eyes that irritate and cause
discomfort. The eyes can also become sensitive to light and the eyelids
can become red in color. It is common for this condition to go
unnoticed as it doesn't bother everyone in the same way and the disease
may only be discovered when a doctor or a ophthalmologist has carried
out a medical check.
It is important to get this condition treated
as left untreated there can be serious complications and the cornea can
become damaged which is known as rosacea keratitis.
This condition
can cause long term damage and will affect vision. Treatment comes in
the form of rosacea eye drops and should be prescribed by a qualified
doctor.
